Thursday, 10 March 2022 - New Zealand’s top-selling large SUV, the Hyundai Santa Fe gets a hybrid powertrain.

Santa Fe is Hyundai’s longest-running SUV now in its 22nd year of sale. Sold in New Zealand since 2001, the 7-seater SUV has been praised for its comfort and roominess, comprehensive standard features and functional cabin design, as well as safety, having received a 5 star ANCAP rating. The latest series of hybrid technology enhancements provide Santa Fe lovers with another choice in the range, that are looking to have a lesser impact on the environment, without compromising on power and creature comforts.

New Zealand’s favourite family SUV, the Santa Fe is the first hybrid SUV in Hyundai New Zealand’s line-up. It will be joined by smaller siblings Kona and Tucson by the end of 2022.

Hyundai New Zealand General Manager, Chris Blair says, “The all-new Santa Fe Hybrid is another milestone vehicle for Hyundai New Zealand. It’s the first of three hybrid SUV’s we have arriving in 2022, and another important step towards the reducation of carbon emissions in New Zealand. We are very much committed to providing Kiwis with the most choice when it comes to eco-friendly drivetrains. By the end of 2022, we will have introduced seven EV and Hybrid models in 24 variants since 2017.”

The Santa Fe is available with Hyundai’s 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine combined with either a 169kW Hybrid or a 195kW Plug-in Hybrid option. A six-speed fully automatic gearbox is standard on all models with Hyundai’s HTRAC 4WD system featuring intelligent torque distribution and 4 drive modes.

Combined power and torque outputs are rated at 169kW and 350Nm respectively, putting the HEV between the existing V6 (200kW/331Nm) and 2.2-litre diesel (148kW/440Nm).

The Santa Fe Hybrid (HEV) carries a 44.2kW electric motor and 1.49kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.

The Santa Fe Hybrid consumes 6.3L/100km on the combined WLTP cycle depending on specification, emitting 142g/km WLTP. Emissions for the Santa Fe PHEV has yet to be released.

Offering two levels of trim, a base model and a higher spec Elite model, the European specification Santa Fe Hybrids come with many of the same features as the regular versions, but add wireless smartphone charging and heated seats to the complete range.

SmartSense safety technology also comes as standard across the range and Hyundai New Zealand expect the car to meet the most stringent 5 star ANCAP safety requirements.

The only aesthetic difference from the standard Santa Fe models is unique alloy wheel designs are exclusive to the hybrid range.

The Plug-in Hybrid Santa Fe is available in one specification, being the Elite model, and is able to travel up to 56 km purely on battery power, ideal for daily commutes.

The front styling of the Santa Fe is a bold statement and like no other vehicle on the market. The large cascading front grill that tapers into the headlight housing, perfectly match matched with Hyundai’s parametric designed grill pattern gives the Santa Fe a wide, strong impression. Bright, efficient LED daytime running lights gives the Santa Fe a unique light signature, making it very recognisable and also safer for other road users. Unique to the Santa Fe Hybrid models are a pair of newly designed alloy wheels. These feature a solid 5 spoke parametric design which is now a key part of Hyundai’s design language. This adds to the overall look of strength highlighting the Santa Fe’s capabilities for both country and urban use.

These specially designed rims are wrapped in Continental Premium Contact 6 performance tires, specifically designed for superior grip and braking in dry and wet conditions as well as improved handling giving drivers full confidence in all situations.

All models also have full-size alloy wheel and tyre for added reassurance out on those expeditions away from town.

The Santa Fe features a comprehensive range of colours providing a variety of choices for prospective customers.


Dimensions remain the same as the Santa Fe’s regular engine counterpart with the primary difference being an increased overall kerb weight due to the lithium-ion batteries and addition of an electric motor. The Santa Fe Hybrid remains a proficient towing vehicle a braked capacity of 1650 kg for the Hybrid & 1350 kg for the Plug-in Hybrid. Both models have a 750 kg unbraked capacity.

The Santa Fe Hybrid comes as standard with a black interior and is finished with two premium seating surfaces depending on the model. Entry models include a hardwearing cloth trim whilst higher grade models feature leather across all 7 seats.

8-way power front seat adjustment (Elite models only)

Drivers of the Santa Fe Elite Hybrid are treated to power front seat adjustment for quick enabling of the perfect seating position, whilst all models also include power lumbar adjustment for the drivers seat.

Mechanical Technology

1.6 litre 16 valve twin overhead cam with Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), turbocharger and electric motor

This engine configuration is a bit of a mouth full to say however it includes a lot of technology producing plenty of power and most importantly good fuel efficiency. All hybrid models are All Wheel Drive (AWD) with Hyundai’s HTRAC system combined with a strong 6-speed automatic transmission. This combination offers an amazing blend of performance and fuel economy.

Santa Fe Hybrid is equipped with a powerful 1.6L Petrol turbo engine producing 132kw alone.

 This is paired with a 44.2kW Electric motor and 1.49kWh battery pack.

PHEV Hybrid Performance


Using the same 1.6L petrol engine however with a 64kW electric motor and 13.8 kWh battery pack. Delivering more power and the ability to drive purely electric for 58km (WLTP). 


Recharging using a 3.6Kw wall unit will fully charge the battery in 2 hours or 6 Hours using a 240V wall socket.

HTRAC AWD system

Both Power units are pair with Hyundai’s HTRAC AWD system. This on-demand system adapts power and torque to individual wheels depending on a variety factors including drive-mode, traction-mode, surface and slip.

Hybrid System

Start/Low speed

When starting or driving at low speed, the electricity stored in the battery powers the electric motor to accelerate.

Acceleration/ Uphill

During heavy acceleration or driving uphill, the electric motor and petrol engine work in parallel to maximise acceleration and minimise fuel consumption.


Constant speed

At constant speeds, power is provided by either the petrol engine or the electric motor, whichever is the most energy-efficient in that situation.


Deceleration/ Downhill

The regenerative braking system charges the battery by using the electric motor to slow the car. When decelerating or driving downhill, the energy generated is stored in the battery.


Regenerative braking

When decelerating (e.g. through braking or when driving downhill) the electric motor operates as a generator and regenerates kinetic energy into electric energy, which is then stored in the battery.


Shift By Wire (SBW) – all Hybrid models

All hybrid models include Shift By Wire (SBW) technology allowing one touch gear selection using the push buttons on the centre console. This frees up space in the interior and permits the car to automatically select the park gear when the car is parked up.
