Hyundai Kona recognised with coveted Good Design Award

  • The style-driven Hyundai Kona has been honoured with a coveted Good Design Award
  • The award follows the model’s 2018 iF Awards and Red Dot Design Awards successes
  • The accolades underscore the appealing evolution of Hyundai’s design language on display in its uniquely attractive small SUV

18 May 2018 – The Hyundai Kona has been honoured with a prestigious Good Design Award® at the 60th Annual Good Design Awards Ceremony, held at Sydney Opera House on 17 May.

The style-driven small SUV was the winner in the Product Design category in recognition of outstanding design and innovation. Running since 1958, the annual Good Design Awards are Australia’s most prestigious awards for design and innovation.

The Good Design Awards Jury commented that “As the company's first entry into the small SUV segment, this is a great little car and a safe option in a segment that can sometimes be too 'out there'. The vehicle design relies on bright colours and cladding to deliver that contrast and does so with a sophisticated and considered design aesthetic. The cabin is understated and beautifully refined. This car ticks all the boxes for good design and will do very well in what is a growing and super-competitive market segment.”

The winners were presented with the new sustainably designed Good Design Award trophy by special guest Jan Utzon, son of Jorn Utzon, who designed the Sydney Opera House. The Good Design Awards winners will be showcased to the public as part of Vivid Sydney from May 25 to 27 at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay. The Hyundai Kona’s Good Design Award comes just months after the model received a prestigious iF Award.

“Hyundai has once again won recognition from one of the industry’s leading design awards organisations,” Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Design Centre Europe said. These awards acknowledge our commitment to developing cars that showcase our unique approach to automotive design. The All-New Kona introduced a new look for our successful SUV range.”

The iF Awards – iF for International Forum – have been running since 1953. The awards recognise products from across the globe and from a wide range of industries. The Kona’s award is Hyundai’s fifth, having been awarded in 2015 for the i20, in 2016 for the Tucson, and in 2017 for the New Generation i30.

Underscoring the successful evolution of Hyundai’s design language in the Kona, the model’s Good Design Award joins a highly sought-after Red Dot Design Award.

The Kona’s Red Dot Award makes five consecutive years in which the brand has been recognised for outstanding design, following on from Red Dot successes with the i20, Sonata and Genesis.

The international Red Dot Design Award is decided by a jury of high-profile designers, professors and journalists and is awarded by renowned German design institution the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen.

With passenger-car-like driving dynamics, versatility and refinement, and eye-catching exterior design, the Kona is a uniquely appealing proposition in the small SUV class. The Kona offers a wide range of active safety technology including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, and a comprehensive suite of standard equipment featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Nine body colour choices and two contrasting roof colour options allow owners to tailor the eye-catching Kona to their taste.
