Supporting Sailing in NZ

Sailing has been a part of the New Zealand culture since the very beginning. Whether sailing is enjoyed as a sport, a hobby or merely a way of enjoying the outdoors, Hyundai’s support is there every sail of the way.

Hyundai are proud sponsors of the Royal Akarana Yacht Club and two racing classes, created for Kiwis by Kiwis.

Royal Akarana Yacht Club

The Royal Akarana Yacht Club has been overlooking the beautiful Hauraki Gulf from Okahu Bay since 1895. It has played a major role in the national and wider Pacific sailing scene since its beginning. Home to yacht classes and a popular paddling division, the RAYC has introduced Kiwis of all ages to the joys and freedom of sailing.

M-Class

Designed by Arch Logan in 1922, this classic yacht is one of the few racing yachts that have survived the constant change in progress.

Kauri-clinker built, the “Patiki” design eventually inspired Bob Stewart’s designs in the 34’s.

Noted for its style & companionship, the M-Class made us feel right at home. In return for Hyundai’s support, the M-Class sailors proudly display the Hyundai logo on their mainsails, boat covers and apparel.

M-Class 90th Anniversary

The 2012/13 season will mark 90 uninterrupted seasons of racing on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour for the iconic M-Class. The season’s first regatta is set for Auckland Anniversary Day, 28 January, this will mark the 90th Year that the Emmies have competed in this regatta, a record for any class. The official celebration of the anniversary will include a reunion event on Friday 15 March and a social race from the Royal Akarana Yacht Club at Auckland’s Okahu Bay on Saturday, 16 March. With celebrations to follow that evening at the RAYC. We’d like to invite all current and previous M-Class sailors, young and old, to get in touch to join us in celebrating this iconic class.

The Stewart 34 Class

Bob Stewart’s revolutionary design first hit the water in 1959. More than 50 years on, the broad-beamed and light “flat-fish” design has stood the test of time. Several original owners are still sailing and enjoying their Stewarts today as it offers affordable and comfortable family cruising.

Hyundai is proud to support a 100% Kiwi classic like the Stewart.
