ESP (Electronic Stability Program)

Vehicle Safety with ESC

ESP helps enhance vehicle safety by electronically controlling engine torque and each of the four wheel brakes when it senses that a vehicle is leaning and slipping.

In 2007, Hyundai was commended for being the first mainstream manufacturer to introduce Electronic Stability Programme (known as Electronic Stability Control or ESC in the auto industry) as standard on all New Zealand new vehicles.  Many manufacturers only offer such vehicle safety features as standard on Elite models or as an optional extra.  Rest assured that whether you purchase a base or Elite model Hyundai, you will get the same high level of safety features as standard.

ESC is widely recognised as the most significant vehicle safety feature since the seat belt.  Independent research shows that cars equipped with ESC are a third less likely to be involved in a collision.  With their high centre of gravity, SUV’s benefit even more from ESC - recording 67% fewer accidents than SUV’s without ESC.

A study on Electronic Stability Control by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) showed that overall fatal accidents were reduced by a massive 43%.  If all cars in New Zealand had ESC, this would have meant that of the 366 accident fatalities, 164 may not have occurred in 2008.
