Creating Eco-Friendly Diesel Vehicles

Hyundai have one of the world’s most advanced diesel engines. They are powerful, energy efficient, economical and they readily meet the toughest of diesel vehicle emission standards.  This commitment has made Hyundai one of the world’s most respected automotive brands, and one of the fastest growing.  In New Zealand, Hyundai passenger vehicles have been the biggest selling diesel passenger range for the last three years running, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Hybrid Cars (HEV)

In addition to the popular diesel vehicle technology, Hyundai is investing in the development of green vehicles such as the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and alternative Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV), a technology which results in the further reduction of greenhouse emissions.

  • Hybrid cars mate a conventional power-train along with an electric motor and battery system. As a result, Hybrid cars offer improved energy efficiency and an overall reduction in emissions. When compared to conventional petrol, Hybrid cars provide a greater than 50% improvement in fuel economy and a 15% and greater reduction in total emissions.
  • FCEV uses hydrogen, methanol or natural gas as its main fuel in reaction with oxygen, resulting in the creation of electricity which powers the vehicle. Using hydrogen as an alternative fuel source means the only emission from FCEV is H2O - water! FCEV offers a quiet ride, increased power and massively improved fuel economy.

Hyundai Motor Company has made a commitment to the European Unions’ CO2 Reduction strategy. By 2009 Hyundai is targeting a 29% reduction in the average CO2 output per vehicle to 140g/km.  The New Zealand government target is to reduce the rated emissions per kilometer, of combined average new and used vehicles entering the light vehicle fleet, to 170 grams CO2 per kilometre by 2015.  Currently 50% of the Hyundai range sold in New Zealand meets this target and with the Hyundai Motor Company commitment to CO2 reduction, the company looks poised to meet both New Zealand and European standards in plenty of time.
